Free in Tokyo. You are not in Japan during the sumo season, however one idea proving popular is a private guided walking tour to view a sumo stable (training house) followed by a walk through of a designated historic area of the city. I have now included this. It starts 0730hrs and concludes at midday. Afternoon free.

Depart on train at 0932hrs arriving Nagano 1105hrs. Remainder of the day free to tour this beautiful, modern city and its many ancient temples and monuments.
Tuesday 8 October
Today we have included rental of a car, allowing you to tour the area at will. Our suggestions are to visit the world famous snow monkeys who live at the thermal springs at Jigokudani. Also the local buddhist temples famed for their autumn foliage. Perhaps then on to St Cousair winery for a meal in either their bistro or famed restaurant. Set in the hill above Nagano, this is a real treat. Nearby is the town of Matsumoto, featuring one of the most (if not the most) spectacular moated castles in Japan. Return to Nagano. Drop off car.

Free in Nagano. If yesterday was a bit busy, you can easily visit Matsumoto today by local train. Its just 35 mins away.
