Monday 30 September
After a Japanese or Western breakfast, you pick up your hire car** and head off along the beautiful country roads, passing rice fields, shrines and through small villages. Our first stop will be at Sukyojitakuandera (Suk Yoji Temple), a Zen temple dating from 1392. Try a meditation session or enjoy typical temple vegetarian food. Then on to Ankokuji Temple, a Buddhist temple famed the world over for its deep rich display of foliage during autumn. The azalea trees turn from green to deep red, to bold yellow. It truly is a wonder to see. Back in the car and drive into the small township of Toyooka. Time perhaps to sample the local soba noodles? These famous buckwheat noodles originate in this area and are an ideal dish for lunch time. Go to Kogetsudo café – just near the famous castle. Refreshed, time to visit the stunning timber edifice of Izushi Castle before concluding our day with a walk through of the marvellous Eiraku Kabuki Theatre. One of the oldest kabuki theatres in Japan, there are often performances to experience, if not then enjoy the historic posters and tapestries which line the walls. It’s an amazing timber building – a feast for one’s eyes. Return your car to Kinosaki this evening. Return to the ryokan for a spa or relax in your yukata and enjoy dinner.
** If you do not wish to drive a car, we have a marvellous itinerary for you instead.
Time this morning to walk around Kinosaki Onsen before getting to the station and catching the 1130hrs bus to Izushi. On arrival at 1240hrs, time for lunch (perhaps soba noodles?) before entering the town and visiting the castle. Then visit the castle and the Eiraku Kabuki Theatre, before enjoying a demonstration of porcelain painting at Izushi-yak workshop and a tasting of local Sake at the Sasazuru Cellars. Then back to Kinosaki Onsen by bus or train.
Tuesday 1 October
After a leisurely breakfast, drive north of the onsen to the area around the Sea of Japan and Wasaka Bay. Here is the beautiful small fishing town of Ine, in Kyoto Prefecture, a town of 2500 souls is tucked between the mountains of the mainland and the sea.
To make the most of this narrow strip of land, the town employs a unique architectural method most commonly known as “Ine no Funaya,” where “funaya” means “boathouse.” Extending over five kilometers around the sheltered coastline, the town features around 230 funaya-style homes built along Ine Bay’s periphery, creating a landscape that’s earned a two-star rating in the Michelin Green Guide Japan. Also, in 2005 this area became the very first fishing village ever to be registered as an Important Preservation District for a Group of Traditional Buildings. Take a water taxi to enjoy the architecture from the water and sit and enjoy a green tea at one of the numerous traditional tea houses. Leave Ine and head back to Kinosaki Onsen for a leisurely dinner. (e)

Experience of tours to Japan has shown most of our passengers find a typical Japanese breakfast (soup, cold smoked fish, fish roe, cold omelette, porridge, etc) not to their liking. Instead we find numerous cafes near to our hotels offering more European style of cuisine, at affordable prices.
Here is a selection of 4 star hotels personally selected by us, offering comfort, good surroundings and value for money. Our tour products are based on these (or similar). We can of course provide you with prices for other properties. Just email us.
