Pick up your car rental and make the picturesque drive north, over the Harbour Bridge, and onto the tranquil Bay of Islands region. Picturesque coves, secluded beaches, cute villages and lots to do. Check in to the Duke of Marlborough Hotel.
Do as little or as much as you like today. You are in paradise! Perhaps take a stroll through Russell or if the weather is pleasant there is nothing better than taking a ferry trip out to the Hole in the Rock hoping to see dolphins jump the waves. Glorious.
Sunday 12 July
Continue drive south, skirting Auckland city and heading to Waitomo, where you can stop at the famous glowworm caves. Then on for the next two nights to the geo-thermal city of Rotorua.
Monday 13 July
What’s it to be today? A visit to the geysers and hot pools, or a trip to the noted Agrodome? A cable cable up the mountain for a panoramic view of the city or a side trip to the film set of The Hobbits, at Hobbiton. All is possible. And tonight, to end with a genuine local experience, enjoy a visit to Tamaki Village and its Maori feast.
